This is a 1 day in person workshop at our Charlottesville shop. We are offering this class twice in May, Saturday May 3 from 9:30AM-4:30PM and Monday May 5 from 10PM-5PM The goal is to finish the top by the end of class and do a fit check. It is a long day of sewing so we will take a break for lunch.
You can bring your own machine to sew on or sew on one of our studio machines.
So, are you ready to start sewing your own handmade wardrobe?
Pattern Details:
The Ashton Top is an all-season wardrobe staple that is easy to sew and style! Wear it during cooler months with jeans and a cardigan, or pair it with shorts for summer. The Ashton has bust darts and a signature A-line shape. View A is a hip-length top and view B is a crop top, ideal for pairing with high-waisted pants or skirts. Both views have the option to finish the neck and arms with an all-in-one facing or bias binding. The hem is finished using a beautiful hem facing. The Ashton makes a great stash-buster!
If you prefer to sew a top with sleeves you can choose to add the 'Sleeve Expansion Pack' and sew the short or long sleeve, View A or B.
Check out the Ashton Top without sleeves and Top with sleeves on Instagram.
Sizing Details
Size Range: 0-30 (33” - 58″ hip)
The pattern includes two size ranges. There is a B-cup pattern from sizes 0-22 and a D-cup pattern from sizes 12-30.
See a detailed size guide and finished garment measurements for the pattern here.
We have made every effort to be size inclusive in selecting our Wardrobe Basics patterns. During class we can grade between the sizes included in the pattern but we will not have enough time to completely grade up or down to a size not included in the pattern. If you have questions about sizing please contact the shop.

Supplies:
The Ashton Top sewing pattern is included in the class fee. Students will receive a PDF digital copy of the pattern to use in class and for future use. The Sleeve Expansion pattern is not included in the class fee but can be purchased separately from Helen's Closet.
In addition students will need to purchase;
- enough woven fabric to sew the selected size, 1.25 to 2.5 yards depending upon the view, size and fabric width (see detailed fabric requirements here)
- cotton, linen, hemp fabrics are good
- 100M all purpose thread
- 70/11 or 80/12 Universal sewing machine needle
We recommend purchasing a cotton, linen, hemp or cotton/linen blend fabric for this pattern. The fabric should have a little bit of structure and not be too slippery (avoid rayons). We will be finishing the the neckline and armholes with a binding. You should consider your first top a 'wearable' muslin, so maybe don't use the most expensive fabric. We should have enough time to do a fit check and determine any changes you might want to make to your next top.
If you want help with fabric choices come see us in the shop. Flat bed sheets also work well for sewing garments. After working out any fit issues you can then sew another top in the dreamiest fabric you want.
Preparation required:
Pre-wash, dry, and press your fabric as needed before class.
Please familiarize yourself with our class policies before enrolling.
