Mondays, June 15, 22 & 29 / 5-8PM
This is an in person workshop at our Charlottesville shop. We will meet on 3 consecutive Monday evenings from 5:00 - 8:00 and an optional extra sewing day on Saturday June 27th from 12-3.
If you are ready to start sewing clothes for yourself then this class is designed for you. We will start with a basic shirt pattern and then you can choose to sew a pair of elastic waist pants or skirt.
Required Skills:
You should feel comfortable winding a bobbin and threading a sewing machine. If you have taken our Sewing Basics class you can sign up for this class.
In this class you will learn:
+how to sew from a commercial PDF sewing pattern
+understand pattern sizing and how to choose the correct size for sewing
+how to cut and mark pattern pieces
+basic pattern modifications to get the best fit
+binding necklines and armholes
+tips and techniques for efficient sewing
We will start by sewing a basic top, the Colorblock Tee by Matchy Matchy Sewing club. This is a free sewing pattern and we will print it for you so it will be ready for the first class.
After sewing the basic top you can choose to sew a pair of elastic waist pants or skirt for your second project. You do not need to decide before class. We will have time to discuss options in class.
Some suggested patterns:
Lane pants by Syd Graham
Henrietta skirt by Spaghetti Western
Mave skirt by True Bias
Colorblock dress by Matchy Matchy Sewing Club
You will need to bring fabric and thread to sew the Colorblock tee to the first class on Monday June 15. The pattern does not require a lot of fabric and if you have scrap cotton or linen woven fabric you may be able to use them to piece the pattern together.
We will download the pattern together in class so please bring a tablet or laptop to class (these are essential sewing tools!).
The Colorblock pattern is sized to fit a 31"-64" chest and a 34"-67" hip (XXS - 6XL).
You will need a total of 1.75 - 2.25 yards of fabric depending on your size. You do not need to colorblock and can sew the pattern from one color or print of fabric. More details will follow after you register for the class.
The Colorblock pattern works beautifully in light to medium weight woven fabrics and is especially fun for mixing colors, prints, and fabric scraps. Linen creates an easy breezy silhouette, while cotton poplin, block prints, and lightweight canvas add structure and playful contrast.
Recommended fabrics include linen, cotton poplin, cotton block prints, double gauze, chambray, and lightweight canvas.
For the first class please bring:
- washed and ironed fabric
- 100M All Purpose thread
- 70/10 or 80/12 Universal sewing machine needle
- you can bring your own machine or use one of our Bernina studio machines
- do not bring any other tools or notions like pins or scissors, we have everything you will need in the studio.
Preparation required:
Pre-wash, dry, and press your fabric as needed before class.
Please familiarize yourself with our class policies before enrolling.
