We are really excited about our yarn offering for the 2022 VA Blue Ridge Yarn Crawl. Shop owner Deren dyed skeins of yarn with plants, she gathered from her collection of foraged and garden grown plants
The planning for this yarn began in the dark of winter when little foraging can be done. Craving color, Deren turned to her collection of dried plant materials and started experimenting with what she had on hand.
The colors in Gather are a melding of Hopi black sunflower seeds, marigold flowers, hibiscus flowers, thistle flowers and onion skins. The resulting skeins are speckled with a riot of color, blue, pink, gold, yellow, rust and green in various depths of shade.
Deren creates color in her backyard 'dye studio' in Charlottesville, VA. All of the plant materials are sustainably harvested. She uses rainwater from her backyard cistern for scouring, mordanting, dyeing and rinsing.
This year we are offering three options for purchasing our special Yarn Crawl yarn. You can purchase:
- just the skein/s of Gather
- skein sock bundle with contrast mini skein
- 60 or 64 stitch sock tube bundle with contrast mini skein
Gather is an 80% SW merino and 20% nylon, grown and milled in the USA. Each skein is 115 grams/434 yards.
Mini skeins are 75% SW merino and 25% nylon. Each mini is 20 grams/92 yards.
The sock bundles include:
- 1 skein or a knitted tube of Gather yarn
- 1 coordinating mini skein dyed with Hopi black sunflower seeds or thistle/marigold flowers
- organic cotton EWE project bag
The yarn is perfect for socks, shawls, or garments. It will work in any pattern calling for fingering weight yarn.
Deren knit a quick Kasia tee. A cute warm weather top, pattern available on Ravelry. When knitting garments with this yarn you may want to consider alternating skeins as you knit.
The socks pictured were knit from a long tube which Deren cranked on her circular sock knitting machine. Making socks from a tube is very fast, all you need to do is knit the cuff, afterthought heel and toe. You can finish a pair of socks in one day!
If you are new to knitting socks from a tube click here for more information. For sizing, the 60 stitch tube has approximately a 7.25" circumference and the 64 stitch tube a 7.75" circumference.
