We are so excited for our second year participating in the VA Knits VA yarn crawl. This 9 day event brings together yarn shops across Central and Southwest Virginia to offer fun, prizes, and all the yarny goodness!
Each shop participating in the yarn crawl is partnering with a Virginia indie dyer to create a unique colorway for the yarn crawl. You can pick up a "Passport" at your local shop and at each shop you visit, the hostess will stamp your passport. If you visit all 12 participating shops you can enter for the grand prize drawing at the end of the crawl. Even if you can't visit all of the participating shops, you can enter for daily door prizes at any shop you do visit. Get all of the information and follow allong with the yarn crawl on Instagram with the hashtag #VAKnitsVA2019.
This year, EWE has partnered with Virginia indie dyer Summer Kiser of Valhalla Farm Fibers to offer a limited edition colorway and a new shawl design from our own in-house knitting designer Jacqueline Cieslak. The Sprouted Shawl pattern will be released on the first day of the yarn crawl.
This year's yarn crawl kits reflect a theme we've been feeling deeply around the shop these days: growth. Our shop and our space have expanded; our community is growing; our making practice has blossomed. The Sprouted shawl, knit in the limited edition Verdant colorway, reflects this growth through a lace panel inspired by nature. Each kit is packaged in a complimentary organic cotton project bag hand-stamped with an original print.
Our special colorway, Verdant is, a subtly variegated olive green with aubergine, rose, and gold speckles. The base, Farmhouse Single, is a single ply merino fingering weight yarn, which takes the dye especially well, resulting in vibrant, precise colors. Verdant reflects the hues of spring and early summer, evoking sprouted plants with just-emerging buds (photos coming soon).
The Sprouted Shawl pattern is meant to be knit with a fingering weight yarn held double with a lace weight mohair yarn. Our shawl kits will include one skein of mohair/silk lace weight yarn in your choice of 1 of 4 colors to complement Verdant. The combination, knit at a loose gauge, makes for the most elegant, ephemeral fabric with gorgeous drape.
Sprouted is a simple crescent shawl with an original lace panel along the long edge, designed to be knit on large needles (recommended US 8) with Farmhouse Single and Plume held together throughout. The pattern includes instruction for 4 sizes and video tutorials for casting on and blocking. Our kits this year will include a download code to add Sprouted to your Ravelry library.
