Worldwide, blockprinting is one of the oldest and most popular techniques for creating unique motifs on fabric by hand. This class will provide an introduction to this technique with a focus on Emily's specialty: creating impressions inspired by nature!
This 5-hour class will be offered twice — be sure to specify which date you want when you sign up.
About our fabulous guest instructor: Emily has been blockprinting on fabric for over 3 years and has her own line of fabrics and functional items based on her original prints. She also teaches this technique at Innisfree Village, a lifesharing community with adults with disabilities
What you'll learn:
observe nature and create beautiful sketches based on your observations
convert those observations to blocks for printing on fabric
carve blocks for fabric printing
print on fabric with water-based inks and eco-friendly practices
Materials: $35 material fee includes
4" x 6" easy cut block*
lino cutter set*
2 - 4" foam "brayers"*
fabric and bags to print on
The materials fee will be billed separately.
What you'll take away:
1/2 yard of printed fabric and 1 produce bag printed by you OR
1 yard of printed fabric
your fabric stamp
ideas for what to make with your fabric and the skills to heat-set your fabric for washing
*the lino cutter and 4" foam brayers are yours as well
We will have fabric paint and easy cut blocks for sale in the shop so you can continue the fun at home.
Students receive 10% off purchases the day of class (excluding the materials fee).
No preparation is required for this class, but students are encouraged to come with their own ideas for nature-inspired prints and any questions about block printing!
